Mat and Althea Boname Scholarship

In 1972, Dr. Mat G. Boname was recognized for his years of service to the community and the school. A health suite in the (then brand) new Primary School was dedicated to Dr. Boname. Dr. Boname, originally the Medical Inspector, conducted clinics in the Oxford Schools for many years and was the school physician since he began medical practice in 1928. The "Mat and Althea Boname Scholarship" has been established in the Oxford Academy to honor Dr. M. G. Boname and his late wife Althea, which has helped many students further their education.

Craft ShowAlso in 1994, an Annual Holiday Craft Show Scholarship fund raiser was started. The Mat Boname Scholarship Committee has been holding a craft exhibit and sale in the Oxford Academy High School every year, except for 2003, when the new High School was being constructed. The show is held on the third Saturday in October, in time for Holiday purchases, and has featured many talented craft artisans. Demonstrations have included chair caning, loom weaving, and knitting. In the old High School cafeteria, the show was limited in space. The new, more spacious Oxford Academy High School gymnasium affords more room to include children's activities, a bake sale, snack bar, Brooks' chicken BBQ, and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds help pay for 4 scholarships given to Oxford Academy Central School seniors every year.

For exhibitor space information, call or write Bonnie Graves, Oxford Academy High School, South Washington Avenue, Oxford, NY 13830. Phone: (607) 843-2025. This show is open to the buying public from 10 AM to 4 PM.
