Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival is all about community. So what better way to participate in the community than being a Colorscape volunteer!

Volunteers are needed for a wide variety of jobs: watching artists' booths as they take much-needed breaks, working in the Information Booth, selling souvenirs and answering visitors' questions, or maybe sitting with the Student Art Exhibit in the Arts Council Gallery. If you like to work with children and glitter, help is always needed in Art Zone 1. Or you might prefer to spend your shift walking the parks, talking to people about the Festival as an Evaluator; or selling raffle tickets.

Volunteering at Colorscape is so much fun you can hardly call it work! Call Susan Connelly, Volunteer Coordinator, at 607-674-5174, or contact or visit www.colorscape.org to express your interest.

NORWICH – The Ninth Annual Colorscape Poetry Slam will take place at the Café Connection at 28 South Broad Street, Norwich, during the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival on Saturday, September 11, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Free to the public, this year’s Slam will open with a reading from featured poet Joe Weil.

Joe Weil is a lecturer in the Graduate and under Graduate creative writing programs at SUNY Binghamton. He has been published in numerous literary journals, including Poet Lore, Onthebus, Rattle, The New Renaissance, Paddlefish, Maggie, Paterson Literary Review, The Journal of New Jersey Poets, and New York Quarterly, as well as in the New York Times, The Star Ledger, and the Princeton Packet.

At the end of 1998, he was the subject of an NJPBS television profile on his life, and, on St. Patrick's Day of 2009, his poem, "The Dead Are In My Living Room" was featured in Best American Poetry online. Weil is the author of three chapbooks, and three full-length volumes of poetry, the most recent of which is The Plumber's Apprentice (New York Quarterly Press).

As a reader, he has been featured with Allen Ginsberg (1995, Walt Whitman Center), Jan Beatty and Patricia Smith (2008 Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry festival), Louise Gluck (The 2000 Delaware Valley Poetry festival), and the Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Stephen Dunn (2009, Distinguished Poet's reading in Paterson). He is currently working on a book of essays, and, as a pianist/composer, is setting poems by Thomas Hardy and George Trakl to music.

An open Poetry Slam will follow Weil’s performance, in which poets will compete for $300.00 in cash prizes. Poets should prepare two original poems of no more than three minutes in length. The slam is open to the first 20 poets who register. There is no entry fee.
Contestants are judged on the quality of their poetry as well as the quality of their performance. Contestants should prepare to read their original work in two rounds of three minutes or less. Poets read only one poem in each round and should not repeat poems. Neither musical accompaniment nor props are allowed. Poets will be penalized for going over three minutes. Scoring is open and immediate.

Call Emily Vogel at 607-373-9559 or email evogel1@binghamton.edu to register or for more information. The Poetry Slam is sponsored through the generosity of Price Chopper Supermarkets, Norwich Pharmaceuticals, and Meadwestvaco.
The Library will be hosting the Literary Arts Tent with book siginings by local authors Suzanne Bloom, Dustin Warburton, Ginnah Howard, Johanna Sofia, John Taylor Gatto,Kathy Holden Robinson, Lesley Diehl, Kathy Yasas and Art Dog's Annual Coloring Contests.

This project is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Chenango County Council of the Arts.

FILM ART, TROUBLE THE WATER, COMES TO COLORSCAPE

NORWICH – Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival is proud to announce the arrival at the 16th Annual Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival in downtown Norwich, September 11 and 12, of Trouble the Water, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and Academy Award Nominee Best Documentary Feature.

“This is the first time we’ve brought film art to Colorscape,” says Colorscape Executive Director Peggy Finnegan. “We’re very pleased to be showing this award-winning film during Colorscape. And the best part, as with all entertainment at Colorscape, entrance to the film is free to the public.”

Trouble the Water will show at the Howard Johnson’s ballroom, 75 North Broad Street, Norwich, on Saturday, September 11, at 8:00 pm. Admission is free as part of the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival. Seating is limited to the first 200, so please arrive early. Please note that the film is R-rated.

Trouble the Water is an astonishingly powerful documentary that is at once horrifying and exhilarating. Directed and produced by Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, Trouble the Water take you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen.

The film opens the day before the storm makes landfall—just blocks away from the French Quarter but far from the New Orleans that most tourists knew. Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist, is turning her new video camera on herself and her 9th Ward neighbors trapped in the city. “It’s going to be a day to remember,” Kim declares.

As the hurricane begins to rage and the floodwaters fill their world and the screen, Kim and her husband Scott continue to film their harrowing retreat to higher ground and the dramatic rescues of friends and neighbors. Lessin and Deal document the couple’s return to New Orleans, the devastation of their neighborhood and the appalling repeated failures of government.

Weaving an insider’s view of Katrina with a mix of verité and in-your-face filmmaking, Trouble the Water is a redemptive tale of self-described street hustlers who become heroes—two unforgettable people who survive the storm and then seize a chance for a new beginning.

“The evening showing is the perfect bridge continuing the celebration of art and community that exemplifies Colorscape weekend,” says Finnegan.

Located on the greens of East and West Parks in the city of Norwich, Colorscape features over 90 juried artists and crafters selling their wares in an interactive atmosphere that includes live music, artist demonstrations, literary and arts activities for all ages, student art exhibits, a competitive poetry slam and the finest in creative food.
OXFORD – There a new place in town where ‘Maxine’ can get her nails done or ‘Buddy’ can get a great shampoo…it’s Oxford Grooming. Sorry, it isn’t a spa for people, they cater specifically in services for pets. If you’re a dog owner -of any breed- you need to check out the variety of professional services available, and Oxford Grooming is inviting you to come in and visit, especially during their Open House on September 4th!:cheer:

The Johnsons originally hail from the Garden State, but Lori has relatives in Oxford, so they recently decided to “follow the clan”. They have taken root here in Chenango County, including their four children who will be attending Oxford Academy. Together, Lori and Rick bring with them over 20 years in the pet care business; 15 years in grooming. Lori is a graduate of The North Jersey School of Dog Grooming and Rick is an experienced dog trainer.

You can come in just to get your dog’s nails trimmed, or get a “complete grooming”, which includes a nail trim, TWO bathes, blow dry, ears cleaned (and plucked if needed), and a haircut (a sanitary cut if needed) or an undercoat removal. They’ll add a decorative bow or bandanna at the end, if you wish. You can even treat your pet to an oatmeal bath, or nail painting! Special grooming is sure to make your pup attractive, but it’s not all for pampering. Good grooming is a matter of health and hygiene.

Pets are groomed in clean, well lit areas where owners see the process, sit comfortably, and wait for the grooming to be completed. Right after, dogs can be taken home as soon as possible as this helps to avoid excess stress. Oxford Grooming prides itself on professionalism, quality and cleanliness. All of their tools and equipment are thoroughly sanitized after each dog. All dogs brought in must be current on their vaccinations to ensure their safety, the safety of other pets and the safety of Oxford Groomers’ staff. Lori and Rick really care about their four-legged, furry clients, so you can rest assured that they will do everything they can to make his/her grooming experience a positive one.
You’re invited to the Oxford Grooming Open House on Saturday, September 4th, from 9 AM to 5 PM. They will be giving free dogie nail trims, and offering cookie treats and beverages to their people.

Gi-Gi is an energetic, cute-as-a-button, three-month-old Bichon Frise. She is lovable and great with children and other dogs.

Visit the Historical Societies at the 34th Annual Antiques Show

NORWICH - The Chenango County Historical Society's 34th annual fall Antiques Show is coming to the Chenango County Fairgrounds –for one day only- Sunday, September 5th. This is one of New York’s most popular and enduring antiques shows. The Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) show committee, led by Chairperson Howard Fogel and Tom Knapp, Co-Chairperson, have been working for months to present a show full of quality dealers, and the public’s anticipation and excitement is sure to be growing! Approximately sixty varied vendors have been selected who will be offering a terrific assortment that’s sure to please. At past shows there have been antique magazines and books, linens, toys, glassware, porcelains, jewelry, vintage clothing, marbles, woodworking tools, collectibles, currency, mirrors, paintings, furniture and much more. Come early for best choices.

As your appetite grows from antiquing, there’s no need to leave the fairgrounds. There will be food sold at the Grange booth in Floral Hall. CCHS will also have a concession featuring baked goods and Gilligan’s Ice Cream (back by popular demand).

The Historical Societies of Oxford and Guilford will also have display spaces in the building next to the Chenango County Historical Society. The Oxford Historical Society will have photos, books and information about Oxford’s past and will try to help with questions. They will also have Oxford souvenirs for sale including the ever popular village afghans.

If you love antiques and history, don’t miss this Antiques Show at the Norwich Fairgrounds, 8 AM to 4 PM, rain or shine. Once again, they’re offering free antique appraisals. Sponsored by: NBT Bank, The Evening Sun, Pennysaver, and Visions Federal Credit Union. For information call, (607) 334-9227 or 627-6457. Email: H.B.Fogel@att.net. Admission is still only $4.00, so come and support CCHS and take home some pieces of the past!
Caption 2-3: Antique vendors come from near and far for the CCHS annual fall show at the fairgrounds. Last year, this Bainbridge antiques dealer had a colorful selection of dolls, toleware, lamps, steins and more.
