Oxford Village's Place in History

Oxford, one of the "Chenango Twenty Towns", ceded to NY State by the Oneida Indians in a treaty made by Governor George Clinton at Fort Schuyler, (Utica), September 22, 1788. As the 21 towns of Chenango County (in 1798) ages, one by one have been celebrating their bicentennials. Oxford, one of the eldest towns in the county, celebrated its 200 years in 1993. The Village of Oxford, incorporated by charter (with a slightly disputed date of) April 6th, 1808 is now celebrating its Bicentennial.
In 1808, Thomas Jefferson was president and our nation was very young. It would be 29 years before the Chenango Canal would be built, 53 years before the Civil War began, 62 years before the arrival of the railroad and 89 years before the construction of Woman's Relief Corps Home. Uri Tracy was the first mayor of the Village of Oxford, known then as the president; Oxford Academy School was just 14 years old; and the famed Theodore Burr, the "Father of American Bridge Building", started work on an impressive Federal style house for his family, now the Oxford Memorial Library. General Benjamin Hovey, the "Father of the Settlement" died in 1811.
Later, the Canal was replaced by the trains. The D L & W and the O & W would be responsible for a booming bluestone business in Oxford. The railroads were also responsible for the agricultural success of Oxford dairy farms which moved milk twenty-four hours a day.
